Work is progressing at pace for the iconic George Hotel, with developments taking place both internally and externally.
The demolition of the former kitchen at the rear of the building along with the chimney has been completed. Internal soft strip works are also underway across the site.
Removal of the John William Street mansard roof and facade is taking place. Inside the historic town centre building original features are being restored.
The Grade II listed building will be managed by the Radisson Hotel Group. It’s currently set to become the first Radisson RED Hotel across the whole of Yorkshire and the Humber.
David Shepherd, Executive Director for Place said:
“As one of the flagship projects within the Huddersfield Blueprint, the restoration of the George Hotel is a powerful example of how we are investing in our town centre while respecting and protecting our heritage.
“It’s fantastic to see work gathering pace both inside and out, and you can see the careful and precise work that is taking place to dismantle parts of the building.
“Alongside upcoming work on Huddersfield Market, the opening of Phase 1 of Our Cultural Heart, and the completion of restored shops on John William Street, this marks an exciting moment for our town and underlines our long-term commitment to breathing new life into our historic buildings and public spaces.”
The historic stone front facing John William Street is being carefully preserved, maintaining its distinctive three-storey character. Above this, the existing roof will be replaced with two stylish new storeys of accommodation, thoughtfully set back to respect the original frontage.
This approach will blend modern design with heritage, making sure the new development complements the historic architecture while creating high-quality living space in the heart of the town.
An important landmark adjacent to the Huddersfield Railway Station, The George Hotel was the first building on St George’s Square in 1851. The Grade II* listed building is being upgraded which will see 108 hotel rooms created, a bar, restaurant, gym and conference rooms.
