Our place

Perfectly positioned at the crossroads of Leeds, Manchester and Sheffield, Kirklees’ strategic and beautiful location is an ideal hub for businesses to thrive and expand, at the heart of the Northern Powerhouse. Our rich culture and heritage, outstanding countryside, affordable homes and connections to major cities offer a great quality of life for those that live and work here.

Part of the Yorkshire and the Humber region, Kirklees is the third largest metropolitan district in the UK, located in West Yorkshire.

With the two major centres of Huddersfield and Dewsbury, Kirklees includes the smaller towns of Batley, Birstall, Cleckheaton, Denby Dale, Heckmondwike, Holmfirth, Kirkburton, Marsden, Meltham, Mirfield and Slaithwaite – each with their own characteristics.

Having prospered as a textile town during the industrial revolution, Huddersfield’s current incarnation as a centre of excellence in technical textiles, precision engineering, manufacturing and health innovation is breathing new life into the town.

Driven by an ambitious strategic vision for the future, Huddersfield is witnessing significant investment, with a range of high profile and impactful projects underway, including £200m investment in the Our Cultural Heart project to create a dynamic cultural hub. The Huddersfield Blueprint is our plan for £1bn of planned private and public infrastructure investment in the town centre over the next ten years and beyond focusing on, enhancing connectivity, public realm, town centre living, infrastructure, education, culture and business.

The iconic Huddersfield station, a Grade I Listed Victorian building, is set to be a major beneficiary of the Transpennine Route Upgrade, doubling network capacity and reducing journey times to Leeds, York, and Manchester.

Beyond the Blueprint, there are ambitious plans for the Station to Stadium Enterprise Corridor. Home to the West Yorkshire Health Innovation and Digital Tech Investment Zone including the University of Huddersfield’s exciting National Health Innovation Campus development, the corridor provides excellent potential for businesses in the health tech and wellbeing sectors.

The Invest in Huddersfield guide explains why Huddersfield is an exceptional place to invest and do business.

In North Kirklees, Dewsbury is a major force in the bed and furniture manufacturing industries. This beautiful, multicultural town is known for its affordable commercial property and its excellent location, close to Leeds and key road networks.

The Dewsbury Blueprint is driving regeneration of the town centre, with significant investments in residential and office schemes, rejuvenating the public realm, retail and business space.

Dewsbury sits at the heart of the North Kirklees Growth Zone, a long-term regeneration programme that will promote transformational change and is in a key location to take advantage of the West Yorkshire Mass Transit Plan connecting West Yorkshire via a new tram system.

Our smaller towns within North Kirklees host a thriving business community with a range of business parks, industrial parks and retail opportunities.

A historic market town, Batley town centre is characterised by fine stone Victorian buildings – a legacy from its heavy woollen industrial past. The town is home to Fox’s biscuits and firefighting vehicle specialists Angloco Ltd, as well as numerous mill outlets and retail parks. Within Batley, Heckmondwike and Cleckheaton, Blueprint masterplans are attracting investment to support town centre regeneration. Access, connectivity, and public realm improvements are the primary focus.

Cleckheaton blueprint is under development but some of the plans propose improving connections between Spen Valley Greenway and the town centre. This will provide a new opening into Cleckheaton for passing walkers and cyclists, helping to drive footfall in the town to support local businesses.

As with all the Council’s local blueprints, we want to celebrate each town centre’s heritage whilst making positive changes for the long term sustainability and growth of the local economy.

Mirfield blends its industrial roots with beautiful landscapes, including the Calder and Hebble Canal and River Calder which run through the area. Textiles remain a key industry, with John Cotton Group’s headquarters based locally.

Mirfield, Dewsbury and Batley are all major beneficiaries of the Transpennine Route Upgrade, doubling network capacity, improving stations, and reducing journey times to Leeds, York and Manchester.

To the south of Huddersfield lie the Colne and Holme Valleys, home to picturesque countryside dotted with market towns and Yorkshire villages including Holmfirth, Meltham, Marsden, Slaithwaite, Kirkburton and Denby Dale.

These areas are not only popular with tourists, drawn in by being the filming locations for Last of the Summer Wine, but also for entrepreneurs and businesses in the digital and creative sectors.

Slaithwaite, voted best place to live in the North and North East 2022 by the Sunday Times, is home to the recently refurbished Innovation Business Hub Globe. Both Slaithwaite and Marsden will see major station redevelopments at part of Network Rail’s Transpennine Route Upgrade, whilst Honley’s station revamp is part of the £48m upgrade to the Penistone Rail Line connecting Huddersfield and Sheffield.

In Holmfirth, work is underway to deliver the £10 million Town Centre Access Plan scheme prioritising sustainable transport.
