Second heritage consultation for Huddersfield

Kirklees Council want further input on new guidance around Huddersfield heritage.

Kirklees Council recently asked for feedback on the new Huddersfield Town Centre Conservation Area Appraisal, Management Plan and the Shop Front Design Guide – documents that have been put together with funding from Historic England after the area became part of Historic England’s National Heritage at Risk Register in 2020. It will set out a series of management proposals and tools to protect heritage assets and support regeneration projects within town centre blueprints and beyond.

They have received a high number of responses so far which are being reviewed and will be considered by the Conservation and Design team. Within the responses, there are several key themes that people have raised and the council would like further feedback from residents.

Because of the high amount of interest in this consultation, a second round of engagement around the documents will run from Monday 9 December to Friday the 20 December, residents can find more information and the documents here – Huddersfield conservation area appraisal, management plan and shop front guidance | Kirklees Council

The consultation will include an engagement workshop with the public on Monday 9 December – 1:00 – 2:00pm to provide an opportunity to focus in on and explore the key themes identified in more detail.

Councillor Graham Turner, Cabinet Member for Finance & Regeneration, said:

“We really appreciate the feedback we have received so far on the documents and take any points seriously, that’s why we want to give people more time to respond and a chance to speak to council teams in detail.

“So far, residents have shown how much the heritage of Huddersfield town centre means to them and we want to make sure this guidance is right to protect and maintain the heritage for the future.

“Further input on the appraisal, plan and guidance will continue to help us shape future projects across Huddersfield and create a town centre that moves forward whilst still celebrating and protecting its history.”
